I was inspired to found Day On by the idea of Martin Luther King Day as a day of service rather than a day of rest: a day on, rather than a day off.
The first idea was to hold Geeks Day On in Portland, OR, as a one-day event for nonprofit organizations to connect with geeks—people with skills and experience in technology and Internet communications. Our first Geeks Day On was held at CubeSpace in Portland, OR on Monday, 19 January, 2009, with over 30 geeks in attendance, helping non-profits and starting the collaboration for further efforts.
Why hold Day On only on MLK Day? Why limit Day On to just geeks? Why limit it to just Portland, OR?
We are now working together to extend and expand Day On to connect nonprofit organizations that need advice and assistance with volunteers who are ready to help, year round, everywhere.
