Eat Poop You Cat 2021

In 2018, our extended family played this game on New Year’s Eve and in 2021, we did it again, so I guess it’s a tradition now.

Eat Poop You Cat, which some in our family call “The Drawing Game” is a variation of the game some call “Telephone”, where a message is passed from person to person to see how it changes as it is transmitted. As I understand it, Eat Poop You Cat derives from the Surrealist game Exquisite Corpse, where poems or drawings are created by players who only know the immediately previous contribution.

We play by giving each player a blank sheet of paper and a pen or pencil. Each player starts by writing a short phrase at the top of their sheet and passing it to their neighbor. The neighbor then illustrates the phrase with a quick drawing and then folds the paper so the original phrase is hidden and only their new drawing shows. They then pass the sheet to their neighbor who writes a short phrase describing the new drawing. Each turn brings another fold and phrases and drawings alternate until the sheets all come back to their originators. Then they are unfolded and the fun starts as everyone explores how the phrases mutate as they go around.

I’m making at least some of the sheets into short animations to record and illustrate our 2021 game. I’ll add more here as I make them.
